Librarians Report for the month of April

Dear Parents and Grandparents,

Tansi,

Giller Prize finalist Author Marina instructed budding student writers at our school about how to get their work published on March 28.

We celebrated Earth Day.  Our students planted spruce trees. We read books about trees. Ask your children about crown, trunk and roots.  We learned learning strings such as changing words in a poem, writing names of seeds such as acorn, lifecycle of a tree and trees give us.  Ask your children about other words for big.

Days to remember:

·        April 26: Poem in Your Pocket Day

·        May 1: Mother Goose Day

  ·        May 5: Comic Book Day

·        May 11: Bird Day

·        May 15: UN International Family Day

Dr. Seuss books kit

Dr. Seuss: One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish
And to think that I saw it on Mulberry street
The tooth book
I wish I had duck feet
Would you rather be a bull frog
Mr. Brown can moo! Can you?
The foot book
Hop on pop
There's a wocket in my pocket
Are you my mother?
I can read with my eyes shut!
Green eggs and ham
Fox in socks
Oh, the thinks you can think
Dr. Seuss's ABC
The cat in the hat
The foot book

Promising practices in primary mathematics instruction: DAP approach

Some researchers and educators have argued that developmentally appropriate practice (DAP), a teaching approach in which children construct their own learning and knowledge through guided interactions with their physical and social environments, holds promise as a foundation for early learning. According to DAP, the teacher's role is to facilitate learning, extend activities, challenge students and emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving and co-operation.  In short, the teacher is "a dispenser of occasions" rather than a dispenser of knowledge.

DAP is designed to capitalize on children's intrinsic drive to understand their own experiences through exploration and experimentation.  Read more at
